Anyone had trouble with mp3 files contained in cd-r with this model dvd 2910 by Denon?

It should be able to. I used to own the DVD-3800, DVD-2900, and DVD-3910 and they could all play MP3 files. They all suffer from very weak laser units, however, that are prone to wear out prematurely. Sometimes the DVD reading capability goes first and sometimes the CD capability. If the laser is the problem, you may have a general problem with the playback of burned CD media.
Audio-book CDs often contain MP3 files, and you can use such a disc to test if it works with factory recorded CDs.
