Will using this with a 4K player where you send sound to this unit and video directly to the TV result in the copyright defenses blocking the 4K output?

Tricky question. It may depend how you do it. I use an HDMI splitter to feed my DAC from Bluray and DVD discs while sending the picture via HDMI to my projector. I have not encountered any problems doing that. But that is of course not the latest 4k equipment and thus no solid guarantee.
