Well, there are two main obstacles when using a power amp without a preamp. First, most power amps have no volume control - it goes full power all of the time. Second, most power amps only provide a single input connection - so you can only connect a single unit.
However, if you only use a single source unit, e.g. a CD player or a DAC, and that unit has a variable (volume adjustable) output connection, then you can use that in combination with the power amp without a preamp.
